I do not know the source but a US company said that they will make it for $20 or something like that for a laptop and branded it as a laptop for every child which they were failed at last. But our Indian Institute of Technology students and graduates have done it for £20 approximately.

Unfortunately not, as I think the Government of India is keen to ensure that its investment so far goes to the rightful recipients. Anyhow, it may be a while that these start even emerging in India. There will still be a lot of legwork to get manufacturers and distributors for this device. I think the device is subsidised to the extent that the research cost has been financed by the Government of India, but basically the product is an agglomeration of standard "off the shelf" parts. However, I think that the government's biggest involvement has been to cut the duties and tariffs on most of these parts to zero in order to get the amazingly low price tag. They also would have promised manufacturers absolutely huge orders. Having said that, they should generate huge sales volumes within India at this price. However, in my opinion, a lot of aspects of the pricing for this device are artificial and hypothetical for the time being. Let's see how the real picture develops over time.

I'm not quite sure what you're talking about, but are you referring to Nicholas Negroponte's "one laptop one child" scheme by any chance? http://laptop.org

Their aim was not $20 but around $100. I think in the end it is still considerably higher than that, but remember he has to do all of this on an open market without any Government involvement. Quite understandably, the Indian one has undercut all of these previous attemepts by quite a bit.
