Title: Australian call -thru services to make free internaltional calls
Post by: getcopy on January 26, 2009, 09:18:14 PM
I have found following call-thru serices in Australia, which claim they allow free international calls to many countries including Asian countries - India, Bangladesh.

http://smartcalling.com.au/ (http://smartcalling.com.au/)
http://www.makefreecalls.com.au/ (http://www.makefreecalls.com.au/)
http://www.discountcalling.com.au/ (http://www.discountcalling.com.au/)
http://www.freedomcalls.com.au/ (http://www.freedomcalls.com.au/)
http://www.comfortcalls.com.au/ (http://www.comfortcalls.com.au/)

It seems that the call-thru numbers are mobile equivalent numbers, that means if someone has inclusive/free minutes in mobile plan (or landline call plan) then they can use these services as another alternatives for free international calls.

I haven't used these services, so don't know the quality. If someone uses it and let us know about the it that will be helpful to others.

Hope this is useful to someone.

Lot's of new and interesting services being set up. I, like others, look forward to hear more information regarding these call-thru services.

Keep up the good work Mikael it is truly appreciated by all here.

I don't think the idea is all that new

http://www.telediscount.com.au/

Interestingly, several months ago, an unrelated service claimed to have free inclusive calls to a range of slightly more expensive destinations including Australian mobiles ...... but it either never happened or only for a short time

Good to know about new service planned. If that is going to be equivalent to landline number, that will be beneficial to many.

On what do you base your comment prion?  There appears to be no mention of such a restriction on their website, so have you made a test call from the UK ?    :-\

I have tried various providers and none of them could connect. Providers outside Australia
They mention that their service is not accessible even from landlines in Australia!

You might want to try these numbers:

1. Melbourne – 03 9095 7222
2. Sydney – 02 9086 9222
3. Brisbane – 07 3166 8111
4. Perth – 08 6363 5111
5. Adelaide - 08 7221 2444
6. Canberra - 02 6223 2622

I got these from one of the other blogs & these are australia callthrough landline numbers and I have tested 2 of them and they are accessible from UK. Just that there is a noticeable delay in speech transmission. So if you have any service which gives you free calls to Aussie landlines, you may want to try this (if you are OK with the delay that is).

They are provided as a limited time offer from http://freedomcalls.com.au/

Hi Radiakashyap,

Apologies if my post is misleading but the numbers mentioned are Australian landline callthrough numbers. So if you have any service which allows you to call Aussie landlines for free (Skype maybe), you could use the australian callthrough numbers provided for making calls to international destinations. Have tested this with India and there is recognisable delay. Let me know if you need any details.

Method for dialing above numbers

Once you dial the above call through

011 + Country Code + Destination number + #

For example dialing Ireland

011 + 353+ 1 2345678 + #

Why do you start 011?   :-\

This call through requires 011 for all international calls... strange but that's the way it is. :)

Are you sure it is 011? I thought from Australia it was 0011 (double zero) for international calls

I agree with prion: from Australia ( country code +61, ) you use the following international prefixes for making calls abroad:-

Quote
Australia  0011 (Voice calls)
              0015 (Fax calls - Telstra)
              0018 (Telstra special rates)
              0019 (Fax calls - Singtel Optus) 0         ;)

On the website to which Nik referred, it actually says to dial 0011:

Quote

Dial any one of our access numbers and follow the prompt.  Do remember to Prefix 0011 + Country code + Destination Number + # For Example to call India – 0011 +91+ 9912345678 + #

However, if one has to drop the leading zero when calling from the UK, (possibly?), both panda and nixforfun may be right.         8)

Do any of the contributors to this thread have any experience of dialing via an Australian callthrough service ?        :-\

If so please adjudicate below.  Thanks.        :)

I have just tried a couple of the landline access numbers in Sidney and Canberra and they work with 0011 followed by the country code. I made a couple of test calls to UK landline numbers. The call quality, (as you'd probably expect going via Australia!) was not fantastic.

Thanks Graham for confirming that the correct prefix to use for calls abroad from Australia is 0011, as mobaholic posted yesterday.    :)

Numbers not working ?

None of the services listed in the OP are pre-dial ones, and as I do not use any of them, I do not have any information about whether they are still working or not.
