Talks with operators and retailers reveal 2010 roadmap
Toshiba has outlined a relaunch strategy to break into the European market.
The plan follows its exclusive Orange partnership for its first product release in over one year, the TG01 (pictured in original article).
The manufacturer will reveal full roadmap products by 2010, and has confirmed it is in talks with retailers and operators on how best to target the consumer market.
Toshiba’s senior global account manager, Robert Pryke, told Mobile: ‘We’re serious about business in Europe – this device [the TG01] is a statement.’
The manufacturer kick-started its UK market assault when it launched the TG01 exclusively to Orange last week. The handset is already available in France and will soon be available in Romania and Switzerland.
Pryke (pictured) said: ‘We’re speaking to all the operators, and by 2010 we will have a full roadmap.’
He admitted the Japanese manufacturer has so far had ‘limited success’ in the UK and European markets, but was bullish over the new handset. He added: ‘The UK market is the most competitive to enter with a new device, we had to work really hard.’
The manufacturer claimed the speed and screen size on the TG01 would differentiate it in the market. The device comprises the ‘fastest processor in the world’ with a Qualcomm 1GHz Snapdragon processor and a 4.1-inch screen.
Pryke said: ‘Four years ago, manufacturers were struggling to put a 1GHz processor in a computer – we’ve been ambitious with this device.’
Toshiba has worked closely with Orange to create a ‘bespoke device’ for the network’s application service. The TG01 will sit in Orange’s ‘Signature Series’ and give access to Orange TV & Video, Orange Maps and Orange World (Orange’s internet portal).
