Web portal to target Virgin media customers on rival operators

Virgin will make its second 3G move in two months by launching a mobile internet service next week.  This follows its arrival on the dongle market in October.

The MVNO has put together a flat 30p-per-day deal to access the internet through its handsets.  The deal covers its contract, prepay and Sim-only customers.

Virgin hopes the proposition will ensure the company stands out from rivals by not forcing customers to make a monthly commitment for mobile internet.  Instead they will only charge customers for the days they use the internet.

At the heart of Virgin’s mobile internet strategy is a two-phase approach that will first target its own mobile phone base as it goes live on 8 December.

The company will then wait until March to shift gear and take a bigger leap in stitching together the mobile and broadband business.

NTL took on the Virgin Mobile business and brand two years ago.  The business has its eyes on the 3.8 million customers currently signed up to its broadband, TV and home phone sister company, Virgin Media – the second biggest broadband provider in the country.

Between 80% and 90% of Virgin Media customers are not on Virgin Mobile, served by the likes of O2, Vodafone and Orange for their mobile services.
