Title: Smartphone shipments to the UK double
Post by: mobaholic on November 24, 2008, 03:54:30 PM

Analysts find a dramatic increase despite a drop in overall mobile shipments

The rise in popularity of smartphone devices has been highlighted after figures showed that smartphone shipments to the UK have increased by almost 100% in one year.

The increase is made all the more dramatic by the fact that overall mobile shipments to the UK has dropped during the same period by 10%, according to research firm IDC.

Apple’s iPhone has led a clutch of smartphones, along with HTC and Blackberry, and now even Samsung and Nokia are seeing smartphones as an area of growth.

The analytics firm found that 2.1 million smartphones were shipped into the UK in quarter 3 of 2008, a 96% rise on the same period in 2007.

The figures also showed that smartphones have taken off in the UK more than they have in Western Europe generally, which has seen a rise of just 50% in smartphone shipments over the same period.

The number of smartphones available in the UK has been well documented. In recent months, high-profile releases have included the Blackberry Storm, HTC Touch HD, Nokia E71, Samsung Omnia and Sony Ericsson X1 Xperia.
