Title: T-Mobile partners with Vectone Mobile in MVNO deal
Post by: mobaholic on October 07, 2009, 03:24:43 PM

Network aiming to take advantage of emerging ethnic calling market

T-Mobile has expanded its MVNO business by partnering with Vectone Mobile.

The move is part of a wholesale agreement to target the UK’s ethnic calling market of 10 million subscribers.

It is the ninth partnership of its kind from the operator, which now claims to have 50% of the wholesale market.  The new MVNO will take on similar offerings from Lebara Mobile and Lycamobile.

The international calling card market is currently worth £500m and is moving towards mobility, according to an Ofcom report.

T-Mobile head of wholesale marketing Kai Schmidt told Mobile: ‘The UK customer base is diversifying more and more and, for a mainstream operator, it is impossible to cater to those needs.  The ethnic market is an opportunity because there are very specific channels that can be targeted.’

The Vectone offering will initially only be prepay, but there is capacity for a postpay service to be added. Schmidt said: ‘There is potentially an appetite for it, but this happened very quickly.  The discussions took three months maximum and we just concentrated on making it happen first.’

T-Mobile believes it is providing the new MVNO with greater flexibility in comparison to some of its rivals, due to the ‘technological basis’ of the deal.  However, the operator said it will remain ‘in the background’.

Schmidt said: ‘Our role is to enable business partners.  In simple terms, that means providing the radio access and GSM functionality.’

Vectone already has over one million customers in five different countries including Denmark, Norway, Austria, The Netherlands and Switzerland.

I'm amazed - it has taken Vectone at least two years to launch here.

There is now further information about the new Vectone Mobile MVNO.

Their UK website is:-   http://www.vectonemobile.co.uk/default.aspx?lang=en (http://www.vectonemobile.co.uk/default.aspx?lang=en)

The highlights are as follows:-

>  Free SIMs available;

>  £5 free credit for porting in an existing mobile number;

>  International calls for just 1p a minute at weekends, ( including even Pakistan ! );        ;)

>  Free calls and texts to other Vectone mobiles;

>  Calls to any UK landline or mobile at 5p a minute, and UK texts similarly 5p.

>  They offer a quite good set of FAQs at:-   http://www.vectonemobile.co.uk/help/faq.aspx (http://www.vectonemobile.co.uk/help/faq.aspx)

>  The porting in option is dealt with by a single text message, which sounds convenient;

>  There are no time bands to worry about: the price is the same at any time of day.

>  You can get information about call charging when abroad via a * # set of codes, before making any call.

>  You can view both your call credit, and calling history, online.

Many of these features are very good for a pay & go service.  However, I strongly suspect that these highlights are a promotional offer to attract new customers.  That is no reason, of course, not to 'make hay while the sun shines' !        ;)

Some of their sister SIMs from other countries have some free incoming roaming, first 10 minutes per call, but I can't see that on this one yet (such prospects were why I contacted them 2 years ago). The others also have free weekend calls and extra credit on top-ups. Would be nice if that happens here ...

Good post MH - going to order a few...

Also good to see an automated way of porting a no in.  I guess the sms has to be sent with the CLID of the no that is being ported ?  Also, it must be possible to call them and given them the details ?

Anyone know if these sims die after a period of non-use or no top-up ?

The 1p international calls seem to be on till 31/12/09.  From their website they don't state how many 1p weekend international calls a top-up during the week will give you.  Anyway some of their regular rates are not too bad directly from a mobile !  Just a shame they are an MVNO on T-Mobile...

Thanks
