In these days of many contracts giving X-net minutes, the subject of locating the network of a mobile number may not have the importance that it once did.

However, many users are on pay&go, or are using landline packages, so it may still be important to be able to look up information when given a new number to call.

There are a number of number checkers available on the internet, but the two which I most often use are shown below:

http://www.numberingplans.com/?page=analysis&sub=phonenr (http://www.numberingplans.com/?page=analysis&sub=phonenr)

I like the mnnc one, because it is frequently up to date, and the easiest to use.        :)

The second link is more comprehensive, as it will handle numbers abroad, as well as in the UK.
( This service requires the number to be input in full international format, however.        ;) )

There is also a tool for looking up other number types at http://www.phonepayplus.org.uk/consumers/ncd/default.asp (http://www.phonepayplus.org.uk/consumers/ncd/default.asp)

As an update to the above post, the first and third hyperlinks appear not to work now, and even the second one now requires one to register first before you can use the service.        ::)

However, I have found 2 new links which do work, and are free.        :)

this is a very good post. i have always wondered and tried to find a link like this.
but only one problem: only original network shows up. i've ported mine at least 10 times in 3 years....any idea of a link which updates with each port?

If there is such a site, seanjoe, I have not found it.        :'(

The main use of such sites is to gauge how a call to a mobile network will be charged from your landline.        ;)
In this context porting is irrelevant, as landlines charge for mobile calls according to the original network to which its number was allocated.  ( This is why it is a very good piece of advice to port an O2 or Vodafone number to '3', as this will save your friends money when calling your mobile from a landline in the week. )        ;)

Although I am not sure about this, I suspect that everybody uses the original network allocation because this information is freely available from Ofcom.  I suspect that porting details are only shared between the mobile networks themselves, ( and that there may be data protection issues which prevent them from disseminating such information to other organisations or websites ).        ;)

In addition to the 2 new hyperlinks that I posted yesterday, it would be good to remind people of another useful site which was first posted by Dan here (http://www.foneforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=11.new;topicseen#new), ( although he seems to have deleted it for some reason.        :o )
Moneysavings expert (http://callchecker.moneysavingexpert.com/) runs 2 such services: one for looking up international numbers, and the second for UK numbers.        ;)

As a further update of resources to use, the mobilephonechecker site mentioned in reply #1 seems to be a mobile sales one now, rather than offering the service it did formerly.        :'(

This is also free, and appears to work well.        ;)

Perfectly true, but that is all that any website can do.    ;)

The mobile networks keep all porting arrangements secret to themselves, and will not divulge that information to any third parties, doubtless claiming they cannot do so under the data protection act!        ::)
