Title: Added software
Post by: mobaholic on June 26, 2010, 05:54:22 PM

I have added a lot of 'Mods', i.e. software modifications, to the forum today.        :o

I am really hoping that none of them will cause us any problems this time.  Nothing untoward has appeared so far !        :)

Some of these give us added security for new registrations ( making it harder for spammers hopefully. )        ;)

I have a new facility to send a newsletter to selected Membergroups.        :)
( Edit:-  This facility has now been added to the Global Moderator and all other Moderators too. )

I have enhanced the options for forum Moderation, which should make things a lot easier for Moderators.        :)
( They will be notified by a test Membergroup newsletter later on. )        ;)

There is a new facility for members to export their PMs in HTML format ( as yet untested.  ;) )

If you have been sent to this thread immediately after login, that is a new feature too.       ;)

And we now have more information displayed in the forum stats (http://www.foneforum.co.uk/index.php?action=stats), including the 10 top posters and starters for Today, This week, This month, and This year.        :o

If any member encounters any unexpected error mesasage, please send me full details via PM.  Thanks.       :)

When I had a sudden glance at my above post having a word "Mods" I thought there are some promotions given to existing members to perform the role of a moderator. I was day dreaming as if I was chosen as well. Later I read the latter half of the sentence that the Mods refers to Modifications  :'(

I have just tested this and I can report it works well. Thank you. This is a useful feature indeed.

Basically, it generates a simple page which you can view with any browser. The file contains all PM's, titles and all links. In the long run, I am sure this is a useful feature which will allow a lot of very valuable server space to be saved. It will also imply that the backups and general running and maintenance of this site is smoother. Though I am not involved in that side of the business, if I were, I would encourage all users to periodically do this, and delete all messages from their in and out-boxes.

One more thing on that matter. Two separate files need to be generated. One for the outbox, and another for the inbox. When you click on the link "Save all PMs", it will only save all those from the box that you are currently viewing. So users who want to back up both, will need to repeat the action twice. This is not a problem at all, as it conveniently separates the boxes into separate files.

Thanks for testing this petkow, and for your very positive report.        :)

I am REALLY happy to know this, because one of the features of SMF software that 'drives me up the wall' is that it only allows you to label received messages, NOT the sent ones in your outbox !        ???

This may help me a lot, because it may be easier to search through sent messages in the HTML file than it is to find the one you are looking for in your inbox.        ;)

However, there is one important question to be answered, which is how big are the files generated ?        :-\

Of course the answer to that will be dependent on how many PMs you have to be saved, but could you please give some indication of file size per 100 or per thousand PMs kindly ?        :-\

( I have approximately 3500 PMs in my inbox, and closer to 4000 in my outbox. )        ;)

TIA.

Fortunately I did not have so many.  ;) As it is a simple HTML file, the size of the file generated will depend entirely on the length of the PM's. However, I suppose this may average out. As requested, I have just checked mine. In my case I had 102 messages which was 159 kB. This places the average at around 15 kilobytes per PM. Each PM (no matter how big it is) has a standard 4kB header! The rest is dependent on the amount of text in it.
