Title: Sky Talk Line Rental Increase
Post by: davegr on January 29, 2017, 04:02:45 PM

Hi all,

You may already be aware but if not, Sky are increasing their line rental from £17.40 to £18.99 on 1st March.

You should have received a letter about it explaining that you can be released from contract due to the increase, however I did not receive my letter. I called them up today though and was allowed out of contact no trouble at all and was even able to specify a termination date. It's quite handy timing as my contract was until October but I'm about to move to an address with no coverage from Sky's network.

I hope this helps somebody.

Dave

It is unclear thou if existing customers will be affected thou..

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/bills-and-utilities/phone/sky-line-rental-jumps-228-year-second-9pc-increase/

IMHO increase will be applied to everyone.

Some channels will be removed as well

https://www.sky.com/help/articles/changes-to-sky-channels?DCMP=snt-skycom:ec_channel_changes

Good moment to haggle the prices or leave if one's not happy with sky.

I am an existing customer with a negotiated deal but the increase did apply to me and I was let out of contract.

Not me personally but I have been informed by a few that they can't get through to some "useful" 0870 numbers. It all started this afternoon.

Seems like Sky is doing what Virgin media started a few months ago. I hope I am wrong though and it is just a temporary glitch.

Which ranges have they blocked? I am no longer a Sky customer so i can't easily test.

Also what happens when you call the ranges?

Literally any number, or just ones for our kind of services?

When you call the 0870 numbers, customers hear the message "you have dialled an incorrect number". But when I got the customer to call another random 0870 number, that seems to connect fine

Still happening today? I might try a few calls when I have access to a Sky line in a few days.

What are the number ranges which no longer work?

According to the information I have, SKY have blocked most/all dial through, conference and radio Service numbers.

So are they blocking whole ranges or individual DDI numbers?

Seems like they are blocked the whole ranges.

So, Sky become just like most other providers arbitrarily blocking whatever numbers and ranges they feel like, in breach of regulations.

Virgin and EE got away with it too.

Annoying  >:(  to say the least but presumably this covers their actions .

"Sky Talk call packages are provided for domestic purposes only and must not be used for any business or commercial purpose.

If your use of 'unlimited', 'free' or 'no-charge' calls provided as part of your Sky Talk package exceeds that reasonably expected of a person using the service for domestic purposes, we may:

1.   Restrict your call service and/or
2.   Charge you Sky Talk’s standard rates for any calls exceeding those reasonably expected of a person using this service for domestic purposes.

We will inform you before we start charging you our standard rates."

http://www.sky.com/shop/terms-conditions/talk/acceptable-use-policy/

Also in the small print..

"UK calls of up to an hour to 01, 02, 03, 0845, 0870 & UK mobile numbers only (excludes Channel Islands, indirect access, dial-up internet & 070 numbers). Acceptable Use Policy applies."

That's all well and good but doesn't have any reference to blocking numbers. Besides, if blocking numbers or ranges is against Ofcom terms, I doubt a contract can override it!

Also you have put indirect access in bold, however I don't know of any clear, well defined and most importantly industry agreed definition of what that means.

Also, AFAIK at the moment Sky's official version is:"there's a fault, we're trying to fix it".  AUP rules wouldn't apply until they've admitted they're limiting due to abuse of AUP. They would still need to provide some evidence.

If that's the case then it's a good news.

A few people I know were told there's no fault and they should speak to the service providers whose 0870 numbers they are calling.

"The fault " is at Sky's side as all numbers can be called from all other providers..

I would find it odd if they developed a fault which only affected certain numbers, as pretty much all calls would go via an SS7 interconnect with BT. I guess it's possible that the affected ranges all share something in common, e.g the transit point is in the same data centre or similar.

No matter what angle you're looking at this...  sky is responsible from customers' point of view for sorting the issue out.

They might be responsible but are they motivated?

Has anybody found any 'uninteresting' numbers that are also not working?

EE just unblocked some 0872 numbers of ours; it can be made to happen with a little persistence.

Anyone who's had our numbers blocked by Sky, please drop me an e-mail at support@telng.com to let me know:
- which number(s) have been blocked
- what happens when you call them

and we can set off down a similar path with them.

I've not had/heard of any. I guess it's for 0870 numbers? It should be pretty easy to argue that callthroughs etc are a legitimate service. Radio streaming and "conferencing" I'm not so sure about.

Yes ive had one from sky (and Talk Talk strangely) for 0870 traffic but intend to fight it fully.
