Title: Portugal to lead Europe in broadband speed provision.
Post by: Graham on August 15, 2009, 04:04:06 PM
Meanwhile, as BT piddles about with its copper-based fibre network, providing up to 40 Mps, and Virgin thinks about offering up to 200 Mps, Portugal's Zon Multimedia will, in the next few weeks commercially launch fibre-based 1 Gps (Gigabit - 1000 Mps) to its RESIDENTIAL customers!!  :o  Moreover, this is being achieved using exactly the same technology that Virgin Media have deployed (!)

See: http://www.trustedreviews.com/networking/news/2009/08/07/Zon-Beings-1Gbps-Broadband-to-Market/p1

Note: like BT, Zon Multimedia is a publicly quoted company. BT has no excuse!

It is coming to something when a country like Portugal is leading the way with high speed broadband provision.  How we make good use of such a facility is secondary: it would surely be nice to be given the chance to try it and see!

Absolutely right, HiPD.

Yesterday I spent time with a friend as he tried to watch the Ashes on SkySports online subscription service. It turned out to be almost impossible to follow the action for substantial periods of time, as the site kept on rebuffering, due to internet congestion. These kinds of problems would surely be avoided if we had a better broadband infrastructure in place.

I wonder how much this will cost the subscriber?  :-\
