Apparently, UK Google Home customers can now make free VoIP telephone calls via their device.

I am told that the free calls covers 01, 02, 03 and 05 numbers, mobile numbers, and 080, 084 and 087 numbers.

Premium rate numbers starting 070, 09 or 118 are not covered.

The inclusion of 084 and 087 numbers is, err, interesting and something they may live to regret.

Have you tried calling any 08 numbers? Where did you get the info if you dont mind me asking? I tried having a look online and couldnt find anything apart from inclusive calls to UK landlines and mobiles.

It may only work with 08 numbers listed with Google.

The whole point of the changes is that the called party will pay for the call-forwarding features, not the caller.

Those who want a number where the additional charges are borne by callers should change to an 084, 087 or 09 number.

That's going to make them pretty useless for diverting to mobiles. They might as well scrap them.

Also, we know from experience that this lowered termination rate doesn't mean that networks will charge any less for calling them.

Calls to personal numbers starting 070 can be very expensive. The termination rate is currently up to about 40p per minute. Retail call charges can be as high as 2.50 per minute. The incidence of scams on this number range has reduced since revenue sharing was banned in 2007, however numerous issues remain to be solved.

Ofcom proposes reducing the termination rate for calls to 070 numbers to just 0.49p (0.0049) per minute (the same rate as incurred on calls to UK mobile numbers) such that calls to personal numbers starting 070 can be charged to callers on the same basis as their calls to UK mobile numbers starting 071 to 075 and 077 to 079.

The changes will take place before the end of 2018.
