Tocco Lite tops prepay sales and is second for contracts at start of December

Samsung has taken the number one prepay spot at the major retailers in one of the busiest weeks in the run-up to Christmas.

Samsung’s Tocco Lite (S5230) secured the top slot for the week ended 6 December, according to tracker information released by retailers and compiled by Mobile.

Nearly half of the top 20 prepay handsets were Samsung devices.
Nokia’s 2330C and 1661 models took second and third place, while Sony Ericsson’s W995 and W205, and LG’s KS360 and Cookie handsets also featured in the top 20.

Meanwhile, RIM’s low-cost BlackBerry Curve 8520 beat Samsung to the number one position in the contract segment.  Samsung’s Tocco Lite also made second place on the contract list, followed by Nokia’s N97 Mini in third place.

BlackBerry devices took three of the top 10 spots for sales at the main retailers, with the 8900 Curve securing ninth position.

The figures did not include sales for Apple’s iPhone.

Mobile reported that Christmas had ‘come early’ in mobile retail at the start of December, with retailers reporting a dramatic increase in footfall and a spike in handset sales.

Prepay handsets traditionally see a sharp increase in sales during the busy festive period.

However, this year, staff reported that in addition to strong sales of accessories and prepay handsets, high-end devices on contract, such as BlackBerrys and the iPhone, were also doing well.

O2 recently revealed that iPhone sales had ‘gone up’ since Orange broke its exclusive deal on the Apple device in November.
