Lycatel (the people behind Lycamobile) are currently being investigated in the UK. The allegation is that users of their prepaid phonecards (AFIK not the prepaid SIM) get fewer minutes than advertised, and that there are some hidden charges which are not made clear at the time of sale.

These misleading practices are considered quite common on many of these prepaid phonecards that you buy at corner stores here in the UK. Unfortunately these companies often prey on people where English may not be their first language. The fact remains that in the UK, the vast majority of the immigrant population still rely on prepaid phone cards for phoning back home.

However, hopefully after this investigation some things may change for the better! If found guilty, Lycatel can get fined 10% of its turnover. Apart from this, if they have broken any consumer laws, then individual customers may even eventually be able to apply for refunds through the courts. However, due to poor records of proof of purchase this is probably going to be quite unlikely.

Remember that if you too have good evidence about such activities, and put together a decent complaint to OFCOM, then these things may get taken seriously.

To an Admin: I am sorry that this is not the right board to be placing this, but I could not find a board dedicated to prepaid phone cards. I know that these are not so common amongst more 'savvy' users!
