Update will address connectivity problems, says search giant

Google is to release an over-the-air software update for its Nexus One handset to enable new features and fix the widely reported connectivity problems.

Users complained of poor 3G connections soon after the Nexus One launch in January, and Google said that the new updates will address these issues by improving connectivity on affected devices.

The update will also provide a series of new features, including Google Goggles, Google Maps 3.4 and a new pinch-to-zoom functionality for browser, gallery and map applications.

Google Goggles allows users to search the web using pictures taken with the device's camera, while Google Maps 3.4 offers the ability to view maps in night mode, synchronise with computer maps and make search suggestions from the user's history.

Google said that the updates will be rolled out to users gradually over the next week.  A message will appear on the phone's notification bar informing owners to download and install the updates.

Postings on Google's Nexus One forum seem to indicate that the update is having the desired effect.

"Net connections no longer time out like they did; maps and pages actually resolve in their own time as opposed to never," wrote one user. "Overall I'm pleased and the phone is actually useable in most conditions where I don't have a wireless connection."
