More ‘subsidiary’ MVNOs could launch on the network, says customer director Tim Sefton.
O2 would consider building an MVNO like its Giffgaff subsidiary if there was not the facility to do it in-house, according to the operator’s customer director.

Sefton was speaking to Mobile about O2’s MVNO strategy last week.

He said: ‘Our strategy for MVNOs is to use customer insight and we would consider potentially building an MVNO if there was not the facility to do that in house.’

Sefton added that new MVNO subsidiaries would only be built if absolutely necessary, and that the operator was not going to become ‘fragmented’.

'People powered’ MVNO Giffgaff launched on 25 November, offering free data to all its members for a limited period.

Giffgaff, which uses the O2 network and is headed up by ex-O2 broadband chief Mike Fairman, offers its members free calls and texts in exchange for ‘getting involved’ by promoting the MVNO.

For O2 feature, including Sefton interview, see next week’s Mobile (19 February).
