Mobile phone operator Orange is looking to expand its range of services by going into the crowded television market, something it has been looking to do since 2007.
According to the Times, Orange's recent decision to
outsource its broadband infrastructure to BT following a strategic overview of the business, will free enough resources to follow other ventures.
Orange will have access to more than 30 million customers, slightly less than half the UK population, following its
announced merger with Deutsche-Telekom owned T-Mobile back in November.
The company would become the second ISP after Virgin Media to offer a four-play offer including mobile, fixed-line, broadband and TV in one bundle. Talktalk is also looking to do the same after the acquisition of Tiscali last year but no plans have been formally presented.
Sky Broadband, O2, BT and Tesco could potentially offer quad play bundled by adding only one additional service to their package. One can guess that Orange's offer could be based on BT's own BT Vision package which is currently available for £15 per month.
The sudden interest of Orange (and others) in the TV market could also be linked to the recent decision by Ofcom to force Sky Sports to offer cheaper deals to its rivals or
face heavy fines.
