Severe weather causes congestion on the networks
Severe weather conditions have caused congestion on several operators' networks but have had no serious effects so far, operators claimed.
The operators said congestion had mounted this morning, when commuters phoned colleagues to say they would not be able to get into work.
Problems with making calls stem from the volume of calls being made, rather than concerns that the strength of masts in some areas have been weakened by the heavy snowfall.
O2 said that one of its sites was down due to ‘sheer weight of traffic’ this morning. Meanwhile, Vodafone reported ‘pockets of congestion’ from high use.
Operators claimed that stores were open as normal, but many staff have struggled to get to their stores amid problems with trains and roads. Even those stores that are open are expecting exceptionally poor trading, with customers preferring to stay at home.
Some parts of London have already seen 10cm of snow, with 6cm reported at Heathrow Airport. The conditions have prompted the Met office to issue severe weather warnings for London, the south east, Scotland, the north east and west, Yorkshire and the Midlands. Up to 30cm of snow will fall in some areas over the course of today.
