15 manufacturers are developing the device

Qualcomm is developing a new range of devices, called ‘smartbooks’, and already has several manufacturers on board.

The products aim to bridge the gap in the market between smartphones and netbooks, and are intended to be portable, with large screens, and easy to use.

The chipset manufacturer plans to roll out the new products later in 2009, through operator outlets rather than via IT and technology stores.

Qualcomm is working with 15 manufacturers to develop the devices, which will be powered by the Snapdragon platform featured in the recently launched Toshiba TG01 handset.

The manufacturer said the products are ‘anchored on smartphones, but with a richer experience and optimised applications’.

Manufacturer partners in the development of the programme include Toshiba, HTC, LG, Asus, and Acer.

Key smartbook features will be interfaces that can be personalised, long lasting batteries, constant connection to cellular broadband and GPS location awareness.

Acer’s marketing and branding corporate VP, Gianpiero Morbello, said: ‘Acer is always looking for something that will enhance the end user experience and fully supports the smartbook concept.’
