Dongles at dawn
Orange has set the cat among the dongles with the UK’s lowest mobile broadband pay-monthly tariff.
For £4.89 ($8.29/€5.75), Orange’s Internet Everywhere serve provides the firm’s existing pay monthly, pay-as-you-go and home broadband customers with a 500Mb per month download cap and connection speeds of up to 3.6Mb/s.
Subscribers to the contract – which carries an 18 month term - will also be handed a free Huawei E160e dongle, in either black, white or pink designs.
For those new to Orange, the company has launched three “Early Bird” tariffs – which start at £13 ($22/€15) per month. Each provides customers with unlimited mobile broadband usage between midnight and 9am, in addition to a 1GB, 3GB or 10GB monthly download cap.
Each newbie tariff carries a 12 month contract term and are targeted at people who want “the freedom to download that little bit more without the worry of the cost”.
Mobile broadband tariffs are coming under increasing scrutiny, of late. Last month
survey findings showed that UK 02 mobile broadband surfers can leave themselves open to charges of up to £200 ($339/€235) per GB when they exceed download limits.
Orange has taken steps to combat such concerns with software that alerts users when they approach their usage threshold.
The company has also introduced an automatic monthly bill cap, meaning that mobile broadband customers will never be charged more than an extra £40 ($67/€47) per month for exceeding their set download limit.
Rival network operator O2 already sends its customers an SMS when they’re getting close to their download limits. So the bill cap is probably a more useful safety net.
